To the girl who marries my brother

To the girl who marries my brother:

I suppose congratulations are in order if you’ve made it this far and still want to keep going. I’m sure you’ve learned a lot about my brother on your journey, but I wanted to tell you a few things about him that you may not know.

-If you don’t own them already, I would recommend buying earplugs. Haha, but seriously. Now I’m sure you’re thinking but I want to hear everything he says! Trust me on this one, there will come a day when he’s singing loudly and doing the dishes while you’re trying to pay the bills, and you’ll be glad you bought them.

-He lives by this belief that all good things are meant to be shared. This means that whenever he finds music he likes, he will pull you to his computer and make you listen to every single song he found on iTunes, and when he finds a funny youtube video, he will beg you to watch it with him. Sometimes the videos are funny, sometimes they’re freaking stupid, but give them all a shot anyway. I promise it’s worth it.

-If he can’t play his iPod in the car, he’ll have a panic attack. Make sure you own an iPod/iPhone hookup for your car stereo. Learned that one the hard way when I broke the iPod cassette and he almost chopped my head off.

-Be patient. Sometimes he may act like a little kid, but he doesn’t think like one. If he decides to tell you something on his heart, listen. He doesn’t say things lightly. Put down whatever you’re doing, look him right in the eye, and really listen. I promise he will do the same for you.

-He’s not always very observant. If you get a haircut, he may not notice. I’m not sure what woman decided this was supposed to be a big deal, but you may have to let him know. It’s not because he doesn’t love you. He wouldn’t be marrying you if he didn’t think you were the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen.

-He’s very honest. If you tell him you need something to change, don’t be shocked by his lack of denial. He’s good at admitting when he’s wrong.

-He’s very proud of his sandwich making. I know it’s not even cooking and they look disgusting, but let it go. It’s not worth bursting his bubble.

The truth is that you’re getting one of the most loving and giving people in the world when you marry him. He is loyal to the core of who he is. He will never talk bad about you when you’re not around, he will never lie to you, he will always protect you, and he will always believe in you. His belief in me is what has gotten me through some really rough patches in my life. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for him.

Girls are just as bad at taking care of hearts as guys are, so let me say this to you: carry his heart with gentleness. He will give you his everything. Please, please don’t take that for granted. His heart is a very, very big gift. I don’t know anyone that loves as deeply or unconditionally as he does. He may not always show love the way he should, but he will always be there for you. He will never give up on you. He will hold you when you cry, he will kiss your forehead, he will hold your hand while he’s driving. He’s that kind of guy.

There’s only one of him in this entire world, so treasure him.

Your future sister-in-law,

Hannah
