Let there be peace.

It’s 12:04am on Thursday morning and I’m sitting, sweatshirt and jeans, too glued to my computer screen to remember to get up and put some pajamas on.

It’s Christmas. My heart and stomach are full. And I hope yours are too. Because that’s part of what Christmas is about, this filling and re-filling and give and take. And maybe, if you’re too focused on trying to do Christmas right or make Christmas what it’s supposed to be, you miss the point.

I’m going to say something controversial for a second, but here it is: maybe it’s time to take the risk of setting family and conversations aside and take a moment to sit. Look. Listen.

Fill and be filled.

Because the God of the universe, the one who wove straw and galaxies, he wants to keep on giving. He doesn’t want to stop with Jesus. He wants to overwhelm you. He wants to make your life explosive, brimming with meaning, and he can’t move until you give him space to enter.

Sure, Christmas is about family, too. Christmas is about giving and loving and sacrificing, yes. But it’s also about allowing others to do those things for you.

Receive. Open your palms and open your heart.

Where there is stress, let there be peace.

Where there is grief, let there be peace.

Where there is fear, let there be peace.

Where there is pain, let there be peace.

Where there is anger, let there be peace.

Where there is loneliness, let there be peace.

Where there is confusion, let there be peace.

Where there is family, let there be peace.

Where there is meaning, let there be peace.

Where there is love, let there be peace.

Where there is God, let there be peace.

Merry Christmas.
